 CHIPPEWA COUNTY, STATE OF MICHIGAN

NOTICE OF SPECIAL ELECTION

TO BE HELD TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2026


NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a Special Election will be held in the regular voting place in each precinct in each City and Township in the County of Chippewa, State of Michigan, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M.

Said purpose of the May 5, 2026, Special Election will to be to vote on the following proposals:


EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT

AREA CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

MILLAGE RENEWAL AND RESTORATION PROPOSAL


This proposal will allow the intermediate school district to continue to levy millage previously approved by the electors for area career and technical education programs and restores millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963.

Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation of .9892 mill ($0.9892 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District, Michigan, to provide funds for area career and technical education programs, be renewed for a period of 10 years, 2027 to 2036, inclusive; and also be increased by .0108 mill ($0.0108 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 10 years, 2027 to 2036, inclusive; if the millage is approved, the intermediate school district will be authorized to levy area career and technical education millage at the rate of 1.00 mill ($1.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) as previously approved by the electors on May 2, 2017, and, if levied in 2027, will collect approximately $3,280,256 from local property taxes authorized herein (this is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2026 tax levy and a restoration of millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963)?

Absentee ballots are available for all elections. Registered voters may contact their local clerk or county clerk to obtain an application for an absent voter ballot.  Early voting is not available for this election.

All polling places are handicap accessible. Voting instructions in alternate formats (audio and Braille) are available upon request. Voter Assist machines are available in each precinct. Voter Assist machines are designed to allow voters who are disabled to vote “in a manner that provides the same opportunity for access and participation (including privacy and independence) as for other voters.”

    About Superior Township

    Our Community

     Superior Township is situated in the north-central part of Chippewa County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  It lies within the area described as T46N and R2, R3, and R4 west.  As shown on the Township Base Map, the entire eastern boundary joins Dafter Township, the southern boundary with Kinross Township, the western boundary with Chippewa Township and most of the northern boundary with Bay Mills Township. A small area on the northern border has waterfront access to Lake Superior at Waishkey Bay.

    Superior Township is very rural in nature. 

    The total area of Superior Township is about 104 square miles (66,560 acres) of which 85% is forested. In terms of land ownership, 65% of the land is public, and 35% private/other.
